I turned this in a club challenge. Those participating were given a piece of cottonwood, told to turn something and add to it. I got a square piece, so out came a square bowl, I added the walnut lid and finial. It is 7x7x4 plus the finial. You can see the worm holes. I hit some with CA and left...
This was inspired by Larry Marley's Cherry pen that he posted on here. I thought I'd give it a try and made it in Walnut! Thanks for the inspiration Larry!
Pagoda box with walnut finial measuring 6 1/2" h x 2" w. This box was turned for one of our local club challenges. Everyone was handed a small limb piece of Pagoda no larger that about 3 1/2" in diameter by about 12" long, and we could turn whatever we wanted out of it. It...
Ash Lidded Bowl with Walnut Finial and Abalone Bead Decoration inside lid. 5 1/2" w x 3" h with 2" finial. This bowl was a real design change. The original piece had a couple of wormholes show up at the last minute and I had to cut the whole middle section out so made it lidded...
This piece was inspired by my friend Mike Fusion's segmented work. Been wanting to try it for awhile and finally got it done. The most difficult part is getting the alignment right. The finial is also segmented or stave constructed containing 4 pieces. Measures 3-3/8" dia. x 5-1/4"...
Another view of the latest in a series of epoxy and bowl shavings experiments. This piece is "green" in that it uses another bowl as the majority of it's substance...plus the epoxy is dyed green. Any and all comments welcome.
Turned from a bland looking blank that ended up yielding lots of figure. Measures 10" x 2" and finished with Mylands Friction Polish. First coat left streaks so I flattened it with 0000 steel wool. Second coat went on much smoother. Final finish/buffed with Renaissance Wax.

10" x 4.5" finished with three coats of tung oil then hand polished. I kept coming back and back to this piece of black walnut- it was too big for my lathe. I didn't have a band saw or a chain saw and so I would chip away at it by hand until I thought it was able to fit on the lathe...

Silver Maple, Walnut root, acrylic paint, pyrography
9.375x3.25
The moon is a walnut (root) insert colored with pearlized acrylic. That section of wood was heavily damaged by grubs, consequently the insert idea.
This is one of those pieces that took WAY too long - Pierced thin wall walnut vase, the piercings are filled with multiple layers of epoxy. Got about 90% finished and it flew off the lathe, requiring a major overhaul. Any and all comments welcome.
My youngest daughter and her husband like oriental things. I thought Ray Key's piece on the woodturners catalog would be something they would like. My rendition is maple burl (spalted and punky) with a walnut base and a claro walnut lid. The base is about 6 1/2" wide and 2 1/2" tall...
Natural edge walnut calabash on a walnut stand.
In Transition measures 10" wide on the long axis, 8" on the short axis and stands 6" high. The average
wall thickness is 3/16" and weighs 9 oz.
This piece is currently on display display at the MFA Gallery in Annapolis, MD...
