AAW July 2012 Contest

"Teresa's Tea Box (First attempt at turning a box). This was made for my wife from a piece of maple that was left over from teaching a mentoring session to some of our newer club members.

Approximately 6 x 3 3/4 dia.
Thanks Gary, The box was turned green, allowed to dry (and ovalize). I used one or two coatings of Boiled Linseed Oil to help the figure contrast from the rest of the wood, followed by sanding sealer and lacquer, sanded back between coats, followed by 0000 steel wool to soften the gloss.

Thomas. Incredible job on your 1st box. My eye started with that great undercurve at the base and flowed right up to the sharp edge at the top then stopped. From there it seems incomplete. Not that the sharp edge could not stay but going to what seems a cutoff finial almost bothers the eye. If from that sharp edge you had either rounded the top or even come to a point of some manner you would have batted a thousand. And since you can remount that lid give it a round. But know that for your 1st box you get a round of applause from me.

Thanks Kelly, I think you are absolutely right! The top point is hollowed out, and was intended to have a stone/finial or some decorative element, but since it is to be for practical use I never came up with a idea to finish it off. Thanks for your feedback!
