Trying to visualize what the mounted blank would look like....was this a crotch?

Sorry Chris - just looked at the other bowl similar in shape to this one that you posted and read your remarks on how it was done. Really beautiful.

I want to grow up and turn like this some day

@Tim Tucker no Tim, this was just a straight section of a large cherry tree with a 42" diameter and a fat sapwood.

Thanks Chris....I am lost - in trying to visualize the shape of that log. The bark - being "cupped" has me buffaloed.... Was that a section of the trunk that had a dip - or recessed area?

Tim, the bark being "cupped" is nothing more than the ogee form I turned dictating the cupped effect. This log was perfectly round and turned side grain. When you turn an ogee form from a round log this is what you get. The cupped effect is only visible when the bowl is hollowed. If I had a picture of it before hollowing you would understand completely. I have a large ambrosia log and will make a similar bowl with legs and will take in process pictures and post them so it will be easier to understand.

Wow nice piece, love the results. Was this turned green? I can't imagine the bark that thin any other way.
