Zuni Bear

Fetish carvings are integral to the Zuni culture, and are believed to hold spiritual power and protect the owner. The bear is the guardian of the west and the turquoise heartline symbolizes the breath of the animal. This is my attempt, using wood (honey locust) instead of the traditional stone. I started with a turned disk about 5 inches diameter.
Soapstone is easily shaped with grinder, use dust protection.
