Connections

Connections with the material. Connections with the past. Connections with other makers. This is a functional German incense smoker (Räuchermann). I turned, carved, textured, and painted the primarily Maple form, but also Cherry, Birch, and Basswood. For the dots, I used seven different acrylic paints, and made sure that dots of the same color did not directly connect. My wife was crucial in double checking my work. The assembled piece came out to be 13.5"h x 10"w x 9"d. Finished in satin lacquer.
I made this for a swap on the Segmenters forum. Sort of a bold piece for a swap, but it's unique and was a challenge to me. I am happy with how it turned out, and I hope the recipient is as well. Here is a short video of it in action:

and here are a couple of additional photos:

Cool concept, Michael. That looks like a whole lot of work !!! Are all the branches/tubes hollow or just a few? Hard to tell from the escaping smoke in the video.

Tom, that’s residual smoke from what Michael was smoking while putting a wrap on this piece! This is a great follow along project over at SWT. It had so many twists and turns as this unique piece evolved to its final look here!! Outstanding effort on this record setting piece Michael!!

@Russ Braun you have me laughing out loud reading your comment. Much needed this morning!! The record 😂 😅

So much work. This was all experimental and problem-solving for me. I think I can cut the amount of hours in half whenever I get around to making the next one. “If I knew then what I know now” kind of a thing. A good time nonetheless!

Only the three large branches are hollow, up to around an inch from the top. The smaller branches are all decorative.
