Boule de Canton with 5 Spheres and a Star, 65 mm diameter, in maple
I thought you had the tools from Davis Springett. Jean Claude Charpignon used them and he found them very cumbersome to use. I put a PDF from Jean Claude at the Forums. You can check it.
I realize my reply is not timely since the orignal post on the Chinese balls was posted awhile back. After working on making a chinese ball for over 6 months, stay away from Crown tools. The Chinese ball tools made by them are much to thin and flexible. As a woodturner you most certainly realize that tool flex is NOT GOOD. Constant catches and constant frustrations. I finally made a #1 cutter myself and used thicker and better tool steel. I cut perfectly. Got rid of all my Crown tools and would never buy these type again. Best Chinese ball cutting tools I now can see were made by Charles Waggoner that owned Conestoga Tool Works in Oklahoma. Charles unfortunately passed away the other year and will be dearly missed. He made some great tools that WORKED, plus a superior Sphere holder which is also critical in the Chinese ball making process. I would have purchased a set of these, but I had already wasted to much money on Crown tools that didn't work and just didn't want to come up with the $450 for the set of tools charles made. The video of Charles using these tools was presented at the Ornamental Turners Symposium and I believe is also on YouTube. Great set of tools!!!
