Fern Urn
New Zealand Rimu with Black Marie fern finial
This was one of my entries in traditional turning at
4th Bi-Annual Taranaki Woodcraft Festival
The categories were only 2 for woodturning
Traditional no more than 10 % carving or embellishment
Artistic more than 10% carving or embellishment

One of the biggest hollow forms I have made being 15 inches high plus the finial
It is as smooth on the inside as outside, One thing I have learnt competition pieces have to be perfect as the finish inside can often determine a placing when it comes down to the nail .At One comp Ive seen the judges get down inside with torch and mirror .
The wall thickness is all the way even the bottom as once again some judges carry callipers or do a tap test.I dont often sand to 200 grit but these pieces I spend extra time on sanding with paraffin oil
The finish is 10 or more spray coats of lacquer 30% gloss but because of the build it ends up shiny
Then buffed with cutting compound and wax brew
I suspect some of you wont like the extra height I have on the neck of the form or that it has a finial
Thanks go out to Andy who has encouraged me to keep striving for better form
Congratulations to the winners a few who are from this site
I was and scraped in with a third in traditional 130 pieces were entered
very nice, i like your finial

It's beautiful. The form is very classic. I don't think there is anything wrong with the neck. In fact, I think neck subtlety sets itself apart from the "no-neck" crowd which seems to be the norm nowadays. The finial is great too.

The depth & richness of that Rimu finishes of a fantastic piece, the finial reminds me of the old feather quill
