Mesquite Urn
David Bartell

Mesquite Urn

This is a medium size urn turned from Texas Mesquite. As is usually the case with the Mesquite that I turn, this piece had bark inclusions, unexplained voids, worm damage, stress cracks and ring shake. I suppose without all these elements it wouldn't be Mesquite. 10" tall and 7" wide. It is a medium capacity urn - about 150 cu. in. The lid is attached with a brass threaded insert that I purchased from "Stainless Steel Bottle Stoppers". Finished with Waterlox.
An additional view.

David - Assuming the turquoise is turquoise, how did you manage to turn the bead in it. Great piece.

That inlay is a coarse ground powder that includes turquoise, color-fast material, graphite, and mother of pearl. The powder is mixed with thick ca to a consistency that can be troweled into the void then hit with accelerator. Once fully cured it turns and sands reasonably well. The beading tool has no trouble with it. Thanks for the complement.

Color-fast material? Is it a turquoise fabric dye?
