You can just lean your piece against something behind it. I think the last thing I used was a bottle (OJ) filled with water for weight. Can't be seen from the front.

If you are interested, I have Terry Scott's article about making a nice small stand. @Tom Gall idea is also good but temporary. If you make a platter and want to sell it as a vertical work, then you need a stand.
