Threads Close Up

Fairly decent threads...
Those threads look really cleanly cut, Emiliano. Quite refined, actually. Do you find that the threads mate just as well as they do now......years later?

I've never done threads, but I did do a series of boxes a number of years ago. The reason I have stopped doing boxes, is the wood moves over time, and the lids don't always fit like they once did. Some do, but that seems to be more of the exception, than the rule....

Great job..... :)

I sell 99% of what I make. But, I have kept several boxes. I think the number one reason for failure down the road is due to people using wood that is not totally dry. The boxes that I have kept, I have the very first one that had decent threads, still works well. The fit is not tight, anticipating some movement due to movement for whatever reasons, such as cold, hot, humidity, etc. Also, I only use some of the world's densest woods. There is hardly any movement at all. With lignum, I got some super green, just cut, from Puerto Rico. I roughed turn it. A few years later I made a box. It was running almost perfectly true. When I do that to a Koa blank, you can see the wobbliness. I would imagine all woods that I would call "soft" even tough they are hardwoods, would do that, they distort a bit when drying.

Good timing, Emiliano..... :)

I'm just now coming in from the shop this evening..... I believe other conditions that contribute to wood movement, is a change in climate.

Out of curiosity, do your buying customers have access to you after the sale? Mine do know who I am, and so far, so good.....nobody has ever mentioned warpage or cracking in one of my bowls. I do spend extra effort to stabilize my roughed bowls, and I believe that practice does help.....but a change in climate is something all turners have no control over. I suppose this doesn't mean it hasn't happened, though.

When they buy from the art gallery they can and will call them back if anything happens. Like one guy wanted a refund or a discount when a NE bowl lost a little piece of the bark when they got it out of the suitcase. I sell more from my shop than from the gallery. I have lost count as to how many boxes I have made, so far, so good, no complaints.
