Paul, The piece is segmented because it is very difficult to get a large piece of wood to make this size of a piece, particularly in Arizona. I use maple for its light color and tight grain. Also, you want the grain to go in one directions and little end grain for this makes beading easier and the color can maintain consistency if not applied over end grain. I use large segments to minimize glue lines between segments and work to hide them in the burn lines so you have a very difficult time seeing that it is segmented.
