Burl tree and vine
(Name suggestions needed please )
Well hopefully I have finished
Like Gordon said this is a hard one to photograph as there are so many things happening it is hard to cover the piece in a few shots. Also the colours of the vine as they have dark to light highlights added...
This piece is 9"H x 8"D and was turned to a wall thickness of .25". The finish is Danish Oil and buffed. I had a section of the log with three visible piths, and after I cut them away, this was what was left. I didn't expect to find such a beautiful grain.
Hollowed with my new...
I decided to make a reversible clock to give the user an option to change his decor. The clock movement and stand can be easily interchanged. This photo shows the front and side view of the same clock in the next photo. It was produced entirely from Red Mallee Burl (approximately 9" at...

This cherry hollow form had beautiful grain and color that I really began to see during turning. 4.5"H x 8.5"D and turned to less than 1/4" thickness. This gave it a nice pucker factor during turning. Sanded to 600 in and out, danish oil and buffed. Comments and critiques welcome.
Brown Mallee Bowl 16 inches dia turnedt o 1/8th thick This was one of those rare pieces of wood that you come across that give pleasure just turning the stuff

The Ebony Pedestal and Finial are fashioned after Robin Costelle's work. This piece measures 2-1/2" dia. x 11-3/4" tall. Finished with antique oil and buffed. The lid does have a slight dome to it.
I got this piece of burl in a lopsided trade with my friend Mark Cothren (I got the better deal). I've never turned Amboyna before but I assure you I will turn it again. Wonderful wood. This box measures 3-1/4" dia. x 3-1/4" to the top of the ebony knob. Walls 1/8". Finished with...
Here is a closeup of the first finished butterfly. I just slapped on a quick coat of shellac. It will get sanded and redone.
I really need to come up with a better method of sanding all the groves to remove all the scratches.
I should get about 16 out of this ring, 14 or 15 will have full...
I know this is beyond the deadline but I started it the day after I finished my maple leaf. ;-)
This was a clearance slab of burl, it is some kind of Aussie species, smells like a hamster cage. Dust leaves a sour taste in mouth and it is very oily and clogs sandpaper quickly.
It had a...
This Corrugata bowl measures 11"x12"x3". Originally, I had planned to turn it with a natural bottom. The wood just looked too good, so I decided to turn the bottom, also, with some good advice from Jim Syvertson along the way. The bowl is finished with 4 coats of antique oil, then...
This piece is Grey Box Burl. It was hot melt glued to a piece of 3/4" plywood, then turned on three different centers with a faceplate so that the back remained original. Overall size is 9.5"x6"x1/5" and finished with sanding sealer and lacquer. Comments and critiques welcome.
