Hey all,

I got into woodworking after hand carving a free standing soup spoon out of a piece of oak from my back yard. It just felt good so I bought a lathe, and a bunch of other tools I'm under qualified to use, and started working. So far I've made a few dozen items, and sold half or more of them. I'll log in through my phone and upload a couple pics in a minute.

I'd love to just keep learning and making things to sell at markets, anything that helps me avoid the 9-5 (or traveling for work) and gets people excited to support artisans and locally made items.

On any given day you can find me in the garden, playing with my chickens, rescuing animals, trying to figure out how to cut some giant log into usable blanks without losing limbs, making toothpaste or tea, and working on one bowl or another.

Next big task: Butcher Blocks, tomorrow, and I am nervous!

At the end of the day I am a self-taught newbie. My awesome girlfriend got me this membership for my birthday...love that lady. I had no idea the AAW even existed!

Looking forward to picking your brains,

Colin

Welcome to the AAW forum, Colin.

You are about midway between two woodturning clubs. The Southern Bayou Woodturners meet in Ponchatoula which is about 45 miles from Baton Rouge. The Acadiana Woodturners meet in Lafayette which is about 60 miles from Baton Rouge. Attending a club is the best way to advance your turning skills. Club members are always eager to help new turners get up to speed and attending club meetings will expose you to lots of new ideas.

Welcome Colin! We’re practically neighbors; I’m at home. I’ve been out of pocket for about a year now and just literally logged in for the first time today. Been missing this gang and I’m glad to be back. And you’ll soon see why. Many many fine people here on this forum, lots of expertise and even more importantly they are really willing teachers with lots of patience.

I can’t say that I personally have a lot to offer here, but I’m more than willing to Help if I can.

Who Dat!

One other thing, as Bill mentioned, the AAW chapter in Ponchatoula is pretty easy to get to. Right off of I 55 at Acadian Cypress on old LA 51.

Thank y'all very much for the warm welcome! I'd like to meet some locals and learn what I can, for sure. Those clubs sound great! I'm also looking at the symposium in Portland this summer. If I can sell enough stuff my lady and I may head up there to learn what we can. She has enjoyed Pyrography, which I can hardly stand to do but love to see done.

Welcome Colin to the forum. There are a lot of veteran turners here and all are willing to help and share their knowledge that they learned through years of experience. Happy turning.
