complete lathe is showing voltage when plugged in regardless of main power switch. Direct short somewhere. I have taken off the control box and do not see anything obvious. any ideals would be appreciated.

Is there a wiring junction box on the motor, in/around where the power cord enters the motor? Could be as simple as a wire nut falling off of a factory connection. I've had that happen.

Check wire insulation for even the slightest damage- fraying or cracks. Give them a few wraps of good electrical tape.

Electrical gremlins, they'll drive you nuts, for sure.

Explain that a little further please. I’ve heard of a dead short, but not direct short. With a dead short you couldn’t measure voltage at the machine because the breaker would have tripped. You are saying you would get a shock if you touch the lathe while it is plugged in? Or are you saying the switch has failed and the circuit is complete and the lathe runs when you plug it in? That lathe was known for circuit board component failures with people who used it for turning bowls. (Too much load and heat in the controller) Generation 1 machines were know for main switch failures (even lots of shipping damaged switchers), and both generations were know for fouled switches from saw dust.

I bought at least 8 but possibly 10 of the Delta 46-460s. 2 for me, 4 for my club and 2 or 4 for other club members. There were Gen 1 and Gen 2. All of those lathes are still running with the same switches they came with. My best thought is the first 5 were Gen 1 and the second batch were Gen 2. All purchased in the first or second year of their availability. I owned one of each Gen. Back then I had heard of folks having switch problems and there was a site where you could purchase them. I don't remember if I bought any but I would not be surprised if someday I run across one among the stuff ☺️
