IMG_9622.JPGI have an old 12" HD Delta lathe. Looking to turn thumbscrews and saw bolts. I've never used a metal lathe and can't quite figure out how the backplates and threaded hub parts work out. Was thinking a small 3-5" 3 jaw self centering, cheap 1-8TPI chuck would work perfect. I can't find many backplates that have 1-8TPI? Is It better to use MT2 adaptor for a metal chuck?
Figured some of you guys must turn some brass or at least how to best mount a chuck.

I have a Oneway chuck and the lathe has very little runout. As soon as I touch a small piece of brass I pushes it off center. Guessing either the chuck or the jaws doesn't have the grip to hold a piece of round stock like that. If I can work out the best mounting option then Maybe I'll looking into a cross slide or tool holder.

Try removing the wood turning jaws from your chuck and holding your brass just with the base jaws (metal-working chucks don't typically come with front-mounted jaws like wood-turning chucks do). Another approach would be to get Oneway's #1 step jaws (#2156 for the Talon and original Oneway chuck) -- designed for holding small pieces like that (I've used them turning 1/2" aluminum rods on my lathe). Third approach might be to invest in a collet chuck like from Beall
 
I will try removing the jaws. I really like the collect chuck idea, I only use 2 sizes of brass. I know there are a few different types, Is Beall my only option?
Considering all the different metal lathe back plates, I imagine a collet chuck other then Beall would be difficult to mount.

What about an ER32 collet chuck? comes with the chuck and 11 collets for $67. Guess I'll have to do some research on this.

Now if I can get a knurling tool working on this. Wonder if that puts a lot of pressure on the spindle and bearings?
 
The Beall collet chuck IS an ER32 collet chuck, designed to mount to a wood-turning lathe spindle (available in the common spindle threads). Not sure about the one you've found -- will it mount to your lathe spindle?
 
I noticed the Beall chuck is er32 also after posting. I searched ebay for er32 MT2,guess these are morse taper.

Which is better? Guess you'd have to use a drawbar with MT2.

Maybe a Beall 1-8TPI chuck and a set of cheap collets

Think I'll go psi chuck and a set of ebay metric collets.
