Ed,
Contact the local chapters in your area.
Used lathes are often a good bargain and rarely does a lathe get used up
Be prepared to wait a while for the used lathes come available.
Use the link to find contact information for the clubs in Miami, pompano and west palm

The west palm club often has good classes.
Also Don Geiger in Gainesville often has used lathes that he helps owners on new Robust lathes sell.

Has a nice looking Stubby at a reasonable price.
Two things I strongly recommend:
1. Sign up and attained the Florida symposium in Eustice, feb 1,2,3
http://www.floridawoodturningsymposium.com/Florida_Woodturning_Symposium/FWS_Home_Page.html
2. Sign up and attend the AAW symposium in Tampa, June 28,29,30
These are two events that will showcase turning techniques, what people are making, tools, wood,
Great place to meet turners, and learn a lot in a short time.
Have fun,
Al Hockenbery
