I'm looking for some advice on 2 part mix ratios to apply to a new shaving bowl. I have Wests 2 part epoxy as well as west 2 part epoxy sealer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm confused, you don't want to mix to manufacturer's specs?
Richard, no that is what I would mix to. I'm just curious if someone with experience in the process would mix it a little thinner for the application.
I wouldn't change the ratio or add thinner, but you could warm the mixing bowl in hot water to reduce the viscosity if you wanted to. Not recommended though if you are using a fast catalyst.
I know I've watched someone add a little acetone to a resin mix to use as a coating. I'll look for it and post a link.
Thanks guys, I,m trying to give it a go with the 2 part sealer as it is a lot thinner than my regular epoxy.
I’d like to see that when you finish it. I’m turning a shave brush handle out of ebony for myself.
I've done many coated with Alumalite---if you look on you tube for a fellow named Simon Gadoury--SG Art Turning he does some beautiful sinks coated with Alumalite which are a good example of how to do---Good luck to you!

Interesting to see that Alumilite can be brushed on. I would think one or two coats of that would be as impermeable to water as any plastic. Is it durable?
I can tell you I did a coffee mug for my Pop’s and he drinks coffee religiously and it is still working well after 8-9 years

Is there any concern with moisture content of the wood when coating with Alumilite? I know its notorious for reacting to moisture when casting.

Thanks, I have some alumilite I got for casting, I just need to break away from the other projects for a bit and try it. Do you have any problem blending inside and outside coats when removing tenons after finishing the inside?
I actually turn with a recess which I usually leave—just sand and finish like the rest of the piece-so it hasn’t been an issue for me—the only issue I have is cost of materials when making a ‘wasted wood bowl’ or mug
