I need a couple of faceplates for making sanding and honing jigs.

I found some inexpensive ones on EBay; under $30 from “BMTools”. Does anyone have experience with them?

I've purchased at least one BMWOOD six inch steel faceplate on Amazon and found it to work fine. My guess is many faceplates in this price range are likely made in the same factory under different names. I've mounted 80 to 100 pound blanks and never had a problem. Where quality matters most in my experience is the screws used for securing the faceplate.

I dont think I could find my faceplate :) I havent used it in years. Its a method of holding I havent bothered with, plus my go-to sanding is inertia and or power. As for honing jigs I use MDF DIY wheels, it picks up the honing paste very well and does the job.

Thanks folks. I definitely never use drywall screws. I have a burl which is too large to safely mount any other way than with a faceplate. I have 6” jaws on a stronghold chuck but the initial shaping needs to be done with a faceplate, to be safe. Not putting that large a piece between centers.

I have mdf honing wheels as well. Wish I had another motor or grinder to put it on.

Nate, I would think it wouldn't be too difficult to find a slow speed motor and put your stropping wheel on it. Even an old rotisserie motor would work, if you can find one....

My first stationary power tool was a Delta 14" band saw that came with a 1750 RPM 1/3HP dual shaft motor and I long since changed to a 1HP motor. The saw is long gone but the old 1/3 HP motor took on new life as a honing station with a cotton buff on one side and a home made MDF wheel on the other.

yeah me too. I run my MDF on a spindle and hold it in

I have a 1/2hp dual shaft with a fine wire wheel on one side and a 6” buff for metal on the other, as well as a nice nearly new 1hp dual shaft with two different 8” buffs for boxes and bowls. I’m running out of room for motors.
