Just having a ball with my little mini lathe and after a breif learning curve and giving away lots of my mistakes, I am finally starting to make some pieces that look aceptable. (at least to me). Here is a little keepsake box I made this afternoon. It is ony 3.5" diameter.

I am certainly open for critique on my turning of this type of project. I was just reading elsewhere that the shape I made this one leaves much to be desired. I am wondering about opinions from seasoned turners here how much thinner I should have gone with the middle fat part that I have and what proportion should the base have have been smaller than the top diameter.

Nicely done

A very lovely piece, William. I know you've not been turning any great while. Yes, you are catching on quite well.

The only thing I see is that the diameter of the pedestal is a bit large for some turners. "Pedestal" being the area between the cup and the base.

You done good! :D

Thanks Bud;
And another question. I glued that finial on with thick CA glue. Is that a no .. no .. or was it OK to do that . What is the most practiced way of attaching a finial to a project such as that with a very light lid .

I am well experienced in another form of woodworking but turning is new to me so I would like to learn most of the right ways from the start as much as possible.

OK by me

William, I glue'um on either with or w/out a tenon. I have even turned brass and copper finials and glued'um on. I've used both CA & epoxy to the purpose.

Hi William.

No such things as no-no's as long as it works. I think that you're doing great, by the way. The base is fine in my opinion. There are some "rules" for proportion but they are meant to be broken. Just do what looks right to you.

My only suggestion would be a bit more depth to the inside of the box, but even that is just a personal preference.

Good work,
Dietrich
