Who all is going to the Greensboro Symposium from 11/7-9? I will be spending the weekend up there, but only registered for Saturday, as I have some other things I want to do while there. I hope to run into some of you!

I have plans to be there Saturday but that could change due to another commitment, which I’m trying to reschedule. I’m a little disappointed with the small number of vendors scheduled to attend.

I am one of those vendors, so make sure you come by and check out the LatheEngraver!

I believe it went live on the website now, but I will be cutting pewa/butterfly/bowtie pockets on site for anyone that needs/wants them in a piece. The piece just needs to be chuck-mountable, or on something that already has 1.25"-8 threads.

Yeah, I noticed that too. This will be my 1st symposium, so I was hoping for more tool vendors. Hopefully more will sign up.

I'm registered for the weekend. On Sat I'll wear a bright red, burgundy or blue WoodCentral shirt (I just counted, I have 18 WoodCentral shirts in various colors - what's WRONG with me? - don't answer that...)

Maybe a blue John Jordan "Life's too short to turn crappy wood" shirt one day.

I look forward to meeting you and other nearby turners, John!

Maybe you could get everyone here to hurry and turn a wooden hat and wear it so you can find them. I've never made one. When I visited a friend he had wooden cowboy hats all over the place. I always call him when I get large green wood and knew he turned hats but I had no idea how prolific he was.

I have yet to attempt a hat, but as far as I know, the king of the hats is Kevin Felderhoff in the Brevard area, whom I still somehow haven't met yet, but hope to at some point.

I didn' know about Kevin but looked him up - nice!

We had Chris Ramsey come for a club demo about 10 years ago and turn a cowboy hat. He brought his Oneway on a trailer. It was amazing. I got a good seat at the front left so I could take some photos. He also made a mirror frame from a ring cut away at the start - maybe everyone does this.

Last time I was in the Kentucky Artisan Center I saw more of his hats. I was too poor to buy a bunch. Or even one.

I had a fantastic time. I really enjoyed putting faces and talking to people I've "talked" to here (Paul Paukstelis and others) meeting up with old friends and people I'd met years ago but haven't seen since, revisiting with some vendors and spending a lot of money, and enjoying some demos by good turners! Even got to finally meet and talk with Siri Robinson (Doctor Spalt) after years of following her through her books and other sources.

I am now proudly in possession of one of Pat Wisniewski's incredible pieces to be displayed in a place of honor! One interesting thing - I was setting up pieces at a spot in the Instant Gallery and a gentleman I didn't know/recognize started setting up next to me - it was Pat! Over the next few days we had some wonderful discussions, what an interesting person. Also met up and spent some quality time with Aaron Harris (wearing his Led Zeppelin shirt!) as well as others. Hung out with my good friend Frank Penta, helped support Doug Thompson and other vendors, spent too much money on some great pieces of wood and some other things. I met a lot of people interested in thin spindles, gave away some wands, and was asked to consider doing demos/classes in a couple of clubs I've never even visited before. There are SO many people interested in woodturing - what's THAT all about?

I enjoyed lots of the demos. I especially enjoyed and got a lot out of some of Laurent Niclot's demos - one on miniature hollow forms, clever ideas in multi-axis turnings (something I love), and a few new-to-me ideas on rotary power carving.

I did have a bit of drama on arriving. Got to the hotel and discovered my wallet was missing - talk about stress! I normally carry it in a little shoulder pack I bought one year in Switzerland, perfect for wallet, keys, glasses, etc. In a panic, I had my son search at the house, jeans, pockets, etc. - he found it on the passenger seat of my truck! Even more amazing, some friends from Colorado were visiting other friends in our TN area - they were about to drive further across country and BROUGHT THE WALLET to me in Greensboro! Zounds - it's so nice to have friends!!!

My next planned symposium is the end of Jan in Franklin TN, (a bt south of Nashville). Already some who hang out here are planning or considering going.

Thanks, John-I enjoyed chatting with you, and getting the one-on-one tutorial on prepping and using scrapers to eliminate low-grit sanding. Very enlightening, and I will absolutely be trying it soon! I didn't meet everybody, though I certainly admired both your and Pat's work; each so different and uniquely artistic. I think I want to try a lidded box from an African Blackwood clarinet bell blanks, though mine won't be as nice as yours.

I only attended Saturday, and given the apparent dearth of vendors (according to some veteran vendors I discussed it with), I guess I'm glad I did. Anyway, I saw a few old friends and made some new ones, also spent money on some tools I "needed," ate well, and had a great time!

Well, I'm now off to Atlanta for a 1-on-1 class with Mark Sillay in Tucker, GA tomorrow on how to "slice" wood. I've been slowly trying to up my spindle gouge game; just watching his videos and practicing his moves has already helped me make progress turning my various Christmas ornaments.

Arron, great! I hand an excellent time. You got the "short introduction" on hand scrapers. If you get up this way sometime we can do the full PHD course! :)
