Just finishing up the bottom on a nice little twice turned spalted pecan bowl. I've been drying that thing for a year. Awwwww Crap. It won't hold corn flakes now.

fast forward to 33 minutes to see how I use the vertitas calipers and a cheap vernier caliper to always know how thick the bottom is as I turn away the tenon.

If you dont mind a redesign you have a nice flat place to glue on another piece of wood, might take a bit of sandpaper laid on a flat surface to true it up. Contrasting or complementary color of wood to finish with, that the question.

Yes.....those days do happen now and then.....
If I ruin a bowl.....I just move on, and don't even attempt a repair. Cut your losses, and get back in the game!
If you don't mind, Robert......show us some photos of your Grumbine chuck.......I haven't used mine for a decade, and I've just purchased a brown Mallee burl natural edge burl cap that will need me to use it again.

Same thing happened to me several months ago Robert and like Odie said, I trashed it and moved on, bad thing about it....it was a nice bowl.
It's all about centrifugal force. If you can keep the bowl spinning fast enough the corn flakes will stay inside. Unless you spin it too fast.
Grumbine chuck? I've always heard it referred to as a donut chuck. This one is 14" across has 3 different sized donuts, from 5" up to 8". The bolts are 1/4-20 and I have 3 different length bolts to accommodate different depths. The chuck is made out of MDF. The rings are 1/2" and the base is 3/4". The rings and base have witness lines so all the holes line up for assembly. It takes a few minutes to set up but you get full access to the bottom of the bowl, no damage to the rim and it holds the bowl very securely. Of course, it won't tell you when you're about to go through the bottom. That's on you.

Not as good as Bill’s fix. Made a design change.
I wish I'd thought about the rubber drain plug. It would have made a great conversation piece. Instead, it went out with the kitchen garbage.
