I find it not so difficult as different and redundant. There's only a limited number of links to show a person, but 3 or 4 different button locations for each link.
Just another victim of the "it's not broken but lets mess it up fix it anyway".

I am pretty sure that the sudden drop down menus that seem to take over the whole page are what threw me and disoriented me. I have been back to the site several times recently, and it has become easier to use.

This is a screen grab of the new webpage; When I click on the "Sign In" button at the top of the page, the Sign In box opens below. As I move my mouse to the Sign In box, I glide it over the button in the row below. This causes the button I've moved across/over to pop open, thereby covering the 'Sign In' box. This is aggravating, unnecessary, and poor web design. I thought web designers stopped using these "auto-open" buttons years ago. A button shouldn't open until it's clicked on. It can highlight or underling but not open upon until clicked.

I use a Windows10 desktop computer. With Firefox, Chrome, and Edge browsers.
It's the same problem Tom and Dave (above) mention.
The row of buttons in the AAW header bar; -Learn-Resources-Events-Chapters-Shop-Communities-Membership-, are roll-over buttons, they activate (open) when a mouse rolls (or hovers) over then. They should at the very least have a delay as mentioned by Dave above, but IMO they should require a click to open. And a border, or something, to indicate that they are actually buttons, and not just words in the title bar.
This sort of button reminds me of the early days of the graphical internet when an unsuspecting user would roll over one of these and trigger a popup ad, or send the user to another website.
Again, IMO they are a poor design choice.

hello Kim,

basically the new site is a list of links to sections organized in drop down menus. They could have been listed on the front page without the menu structure and the same thing would have been achieved.

The link to “Learn” could have been to a page with content towards various skill levels for example. Why gallery is under learn? About AAW, etc. typically is something you put in a footer.

right now it is just a collection of links.

Add my name to the list of those who are really aggravated by the way that the mouseover function is implemented for the menus. I think that the suggestion made by Dave Landers is worth consideration.

My biggest complaint that is the implementation for finding an AAW member or a turning club. Helping new forum members find a turning club was a feature that I used on a daily basis on the previous software. The new implementation which no longer includes a city search has made it so much more time consuming that I generally don't have the time to bother using it.

Thank you for your feedback about the new website. We had a team of user experience experts advise us on the structure, organization, and logic of the website.That said, we can make changes as needed within the limitations of the software platform. Indeed our menus are a collection of links and I don't think we'll be eliminating them anytime soon, but we are able to reorganize them. As AAW moves forward we will be making changes and adding enhancements. The main home page (when you scroll down the page) is intended to be public facing and is tailored to those who may not know about AAW or woodturning. The member home page (when you scroll down the page) will be displayed when a member logs in and is tailored to those who already know about AAW and woodturning. This may not resolve your complaints, but I can tell you the website will continue to change for the better. The platform is flexible and more robust than our last one and will accommodate more. Once again, thank you for your feedback.

Thank you for your feedback, Bill. As I noted previously, I am seeking out a solution to the aggressive dropdown menu mouseover function. As for the chapter search, I'm sorry to hear your are unhappy with the functionality. However, if you select the state and search, the city is also displayed. I will pass your feedback along to the project team to determine whether there is a solution that meets your specific needs. Once again, thank you for your feedback. Hi, Kim .... I was on the site yesterday to look around and experienced the same problem with the mouse rollover or hovering. I have a Mac and use Safari (latest version). The site also seemed extremely slow and I have a fairly fast internet speed with most sites I visit. Many times when I clicked on something I assumed it didn't work and would try again....only to have it open 15-30 seconds later.

You really need to do a tracert www.woodturner.org from a command prompt to see where the delay might be. It isn't a reasonable assumption that a site must be slow if you have a broadband connection. On a Mac open the terminal app and use the command traceroute www.woodturner.org.

Mike, Double click any ribbon title like [HOME] to collapse the ribbon (trick doesn't work for FILE). You can also right click the toolbar and select the 'Collapse the Ribbon' option.

I know all about them. I've been using word since it was a DOS program.

The ribbon is part of microshaft's systematic dumbing down of their users. I don't want to minimize the ribbon, I want it gone, along with all of the eye-candy BS they pack into the program rather than making meaningful enhancements that benefit people who write for a living.

Since introducing the ribbon, MS has been removing features from the application to try to force users to only use the ribbon. Remember when CTRL+F actually brought up the real Search dialog rather than opening the Nav panel's POS search function? A year ago, that dialog was still accessible by re-assigning a key combo to open the real dialog. Changes since last October have even removed the command from the available choices in the Keyboard Customization dialog. There are many more examples of useful features vanishing.

They've ignored enhancement requests to add real cross-reference building blocks/formats so that a person could add cross-references (see Section NN, "Section Title," on page NN) with one click instead needing to add three separate cross references. Don't even get me started Word's dismal numbering system or its complete lack a way to apply a set formats to an entire document without that document blowing up. I could write about word's failings all day long.

One of the nicest features of the Add In Tools add-on is that if brings back the keyboard shortcuts that MS decided that writers don't need.

Word is a craptacular application. A true Edsel of the digital world.

AAW is in the process of finding a solution for the aggressive mouse-hover. We hope to resolve it soon.
And, it's not your computer or Internet connection. We have experienced server-related slowness that has been reported to our service provider. Originally, we thought the slowness was only on the administrative side of the website, but unfortunately it has also impacted the public side of the website. I hope that our service provider will resolve this soon (I've been in touch with them everyday about the server speed issue). In the meantime, I apologize for the inconvenience.

I was on the site again last night and it worked just fine as far as speed issues are concerned. I just chalked it up to an intermittent slow internet speed on my end. But, maybe not!

Bill, I have no idea what you are talking about.:( "Tracert" ??? ...."terminal app"??? I clicked on all kinds of commands for Apple, Safari, System Preferences, etc. and didn't find anything that seemed related to what you said.....but, thanks for trying. I guess I'll never understand my computer beyond the basics. :confused: That said, I was on the site again last night and all was fine.

I guess that it's a moot question now that Kim said the problem lies with the hosting service for the AAW website.

FWIW, tracert traces the route of communication between your computer and a specified website. The terminal app runs in a window that emulates the old text based terminals. Here is a screen shot when I traced the route from my PC to the AAW website. Each line shows the "hop" from om one node to the next.

Trace gives you an idea of how many servers between you and the server you are requesting and the time it is taking to bounce between each. The more servers theoretically means slower connection.

You add up the vertical milliseconds in each column. It sends out three packets, you can take the average of them if you like, that is why there are three columns.

speed of a page load dictated by various factors:

1. your connection speed in case you are downloading a lot of content. Your browser will cache most of it to make browsing around the same site faster. Your speed is only important if the site you visit has very large files to load

2. the website’s own internet speed and the amount of visitors to it since it will have to divide its speed among all those requests

3. the software on the website server and how fast it is. It could be reading from a slow database, large amount of content to search through, or complicated slow software logic, etc.

4. the speed of the server itself, memory Size, fast or slow hard disk, etc.

Bottom line, if one website is slow to load, it is a problem with that website and not on your end. Your network speed would impact very large sized pictures, videos, etc. but it would be same speed across similar sites/content.

that is not that computer savvy.....
I guess i did not know an up date of my fav site would require
me to buy a MAC.....or take a networking class to learn how many
packets are coming down my line....
That said.....
My biggest problem is the loss of the SUPPLIER list
which used to be available very quickly all on one page!!!!
now.....now.we have a menu for each separate supplier product
why??????? Is that why we now only have 5 suppliers advertising?
I do not understand ???????

And the Main AAW home page is still all wonky with a paragraph
of something covering up the login which pops up.....That has been happ since 2019
I would like to know who thought this update was going to be
easier, better, faster, prettier, What part of this upgrade
is better??????

You're right, the current supplier site in not good. It's not inclusive and it is a work in progress. We will be introducing a new inclusive version soon.

I'm not sure what is happening on your homepage and apologize for the problem. You indicated that a paragraph of something covers up the login. I'm not sure I can visualize the issue since we have not had other reports of this problem and it is not happening on my PC. Would you be willing to send me a screen shot of what you are seeing? We don't delete posts except in rare circumstances such as spamming, trolling, and fighting. Sometimes you just gotta blow off steam .... just don't direct it at other people or their pets or livestock.

I feel your pain, but you're barking up the wrong tree if you think that somebody on this forum is able to fix the issues you brought up. (Just noticed that Kim saw your posts ... If you call the AAW office there are no menus to negotiate ... Linda, Kim, Jane, or one of the other office staff will answer the phone and do their best to address your concerns, but please understand that they didn't create the software and they can't make changes that are beyond the scope of whatever changes exist in their control panel.

In the past I have been involved in several website changes and upgrades. I can assure you that people don't like somebody coming along and pushing them out of their comfort zone by monkeying with a website if they are perfectly happy with the way it works. That is why I insisted on minimal impact to the look and feel when the forum software was upgraded about four years ago. The new AAW website software is what it is and years from now when it changes there is likely to be dissatisfaction with some of the changes.
