How about a photo of your main turning workstation? It's nice to see what folks came up with for storage, accessibility.

This is a request that comes up every year, or two. I, too, am very interested in seeing other turners shops. There have been quite a few times when photos of other shops have given me ideas on how I can improve my own shop.

Now, I could give you photos of my shop from about a year ago, but I've shown them before in another thread that could be brought up with a search. I guess it's time for me to take current photos again. When I do, and make comparisons to my previous set of photos, I'm always surprised at how much my shop has evolved! (Shop evolution seems to be a constant, never ending process!)

I'll get a new set of shop photos in the next day, or so......but, I'm hoping a few other turners will give us a look at their shops in the mean time.

@GRJensen .....

Looks like two similar but different Powermatic lathes you have there. I think the one in the background is the 3520c, but what's in the foreground?

I like those dust-free cabinets in the back. That's one problem I have......always fighting dust everywhere......everywhere.....it never ends! :(

The lathe in the foreground is a Powermatic 2014. The cabinets are custom-built and really help keep things organized.

Not a turning station shot but I recently added this French cleat tool test storage system behind my Oneway 1224.

Hi @Jim McLain ...... :)

What is the manufacturer of the pin tool rest you have? I'd be interested in taking a look at what's available from this outfit.....

I think I posted shop pictures about a year ago, but it's always fun walking out into my shop so I just snapped some more. The first couple are the turning area where I spend about half of my time, the last two are my 5x7 finish room and the dust collector space sandwiched behind it, and the remaining in between are a panoramic view of the shop if you can stitch them together in your minds eye. More than you want...
edit: not sure what I did but they didn't order as intended, but I'm sure you can figure it out :)

@odie I like the handles you’ve added to the bowl calipers. Great idea. Looks like it makes them much easier to use.

Also like the 5 drawer chest

It's much better that way when you can use it one handed! When I bought the Versa-cal calipers next to it, I had to do the modification!

I have shown shop pictures before, and I don't think there's any real genius here (in fact maybe more madness than method). Things just went where they went if there was space and I could still access them. I've never really planned the space, but it works for me.

Here is a panoramic taken from the extreme corner of the lathe space.
Resized_Resized_20211118_101125.jpeg
The lathe nestles up against the tablesaw so the outfeed table (red arrow) becomes a temporary catch all for tool rests, face shield and such.
Next to the out feed table is an easel where I place the design drawings of what I'm turning.
Underneath is the vacuum pump (blue arrow).
On the swing away bed extension (green arrow) is a small tool tray that a friend of mine gave me. It gets used all the time, and not just for lathe parts and tools. It's a perfect fit for the rotary carver motor.
Back on the right are red and blue tool chests. I was able to score these at a great price from Harbor Freight (I think I paid three something for the two of them). They make great storage for lathe tools, but if you're thinking of going that route be sure the compartments on what you plan to buy are long enough for your lathe tools.
On the left I have a low table (the first piece of shop furniture I ever made) that mounts the CBN grinder and sandpaper.
The picture is distorted, but it's 1 or 2 steps to the tool boxes and 3 steps to the grinder. I don't mind moving a little bit.

For fun here's an action shot with our friend collaborating with my wife and me on a club project.

Guys,
This is my small shop (9 X 15). I have pretty much used every square foot of space. That said, after taking these photos, I think I found a few square inches where I can put something!

Bill, I think you have more lathes, than I have shoes! Outstanding. Love the index card/apothecary cabinets, too.
Kirk, c'mon you must have more than 9 pairs of shoes. Currently twice a year I host a teaching turner and we have 8 students a day (used to do it 3 times a year). When not doing that I use most of them and have different setups on different lathes. The shop is 24 X 36 and I wis I had gone to 48. Not shown is the flat woodworking connected shop which is 33 X 33 and where the band saw is located. Some of the best Woodturners in the world have taught here in the last 16 years.

I do a lot of different things in my garage shop, making it overfull of “requisite stuff” - motorcycle storage, tire changer, mechanics tools, cartridge reloading, flat woodworking, spraying room with exhaust fan, freezer and extra fridge, and yeah, some turning equipment. Compact storage is a requirement.

I bought a tool cabinet from Home Depot and keep the two grinders and the vacuum pump on it with the majority of the lathe tools and accessories in it with the remainder hanging on the wall behind the lathe. Keeps the work area open enough I can clean up the floor in a reasonable amount of time. I also hung a set of shelves over the tool cabinet for various expendables. You can see the old dresser I used to use in the second shot. I was glad to get that rickety thing out of the shop!9BB61358-2E03-4C54-A964-C3582AC202DC.jpegF31E3185-C2C8-4B4E-ACEE-39409E1BD74C.jpeg

Not many more, unless flip flops count. ;) Looks like a nice space to work, much nicer than mine, for sure. Just passed through Erie twice in October, actually.

Yeah, I wish that I had room for a dedicated wood shop. My turning space has to share the garage with a motorcycle, multiple bicycles, the lawn tractor, and another work bench for the mechanical/oily stuff.
