I am a new turner that just got started back in February of this year. I currently am turning on a Rikon 70-220 midi. My goals are to turn bowls and occasiooal spindle type projects. I have been a woodworker for over 40 years and really became serious about it three years ago. I wish I had done it earlier.
I have been turning segmented bowls and found a niche for them in my sector of the country. I reside in the country near Elmodel Georgia. This is a small community about 35 miles SW of Albany Georgia.
Around here good hardwoods are hard to come by. I generally have to order or drive to Atlanta or Tallahassee Florida. We do have the big box stores nearby, but their selection is limited to red oak, poplar and pine. And the prices are ridiculous.
I have been self taught by watching videos and reading all I can find on the subject. Unfortunately, there is not a turning club nearby that I am familiar with. There is one in Tallahassee that I may look into but it is a hour and a half away.
I am looking forward to some interaction with other turners where I can learn more about the craft.

Welcome here.
You might be closer to the wire grass woodturners in Dothan, al
They seem to be a pretty small group.

The Tallahassee group is a good one.

You might consider a weekend trip to the Florida sysmposium feb 8-10, 2019.
It is outside eustice. 4-5 hr drive
Meals, lodging, and the symposiumrun about $265

Welcome Steve. As Al said the trip to a club meeting is worth the time and symposium are also a good experience. Two good ones also in Georgia. Also if not AAW member the magazine alone is worth the price and then there are the videos listed which have been checked for safety and validity of procedures. Happy turning
