Tighten all screws!

I make it a point to tighten the set screw to secure the chuck to the headstock. I was finishing a cross for my Easter display when I noticed the chuck moved a bit. The set screw to secure the chuck to the adapter wasn't tight. Now I plan on making a point to check and tighten both set screws. Can't be too careful these days.

I always tighten all ZERO set screws in my spindle attachments. Running the proper direction is sufficient. (and not braking quickly.)

Are you sure that chuck was properly seated to the spindle when screwed on? You want it properly seated before tightening the set screws. Not doing so can easily result in increased runout when tightening the set screw(s). If you have not done so, play around with seating then chuck, then loosening, repeat a bunch of times, to develop a “feel” for how hard to seat the chuck.

I use set screws for all my chucks, as even the “perfect wrist twist” does not hold everything I do - Over the years I’ve had the chuck loosen on quite a few pieces. My lathe has adj braking, set to a high level, and I hollow in reverse quite a bit, both requiring chuck set screws to be used.

Chuck was firmly seated on the spindle. That is the #1 thing before checking and checking and tightening the set screws for the adapter and chuck body. I always check the screws each time I use the chuck.
