My selection for Turning of the Week for August 8, 2022, is "Child of the Corn" by Brian Horais

“This 12-inch tall vase was turned from a block of Walnut. A 3-point multi-axis approach was used to create the twist. Texturing and coloring were added to the carved sections between the rising 'stalks'. When I finished the piece it reminded me of a stalk of corn with strands of brown husk curling around the inner corn. The finish is Watco oil buffed on the Beall system.”

The color and texture highlight the carved leaves. I especially like Brian’s use of the lathe to create the spiral of the leaves then carving and texturing the background. Well done!

A beautiful piece, Brian and a perfect finish, too. Well done!
WOW, I am honored! This was a fun piece to plan and then create/carve/texture. I really like the color contrast between the Walnut and the green tones of the textured areas. Repeating the gentle curves of the twist with the carved and textured areas highlights the overall shape and provides an organic look to the finished piece. Thanks again!
