I'm sure I am not the only one that gets excited when @Dave Roberts posts a new piece. Relatively recently, he has started to integrate rose engine patterns into his turnings. His latest hat, "Low Rider" is one example. I've seen a fair number of cowboy hats (and similar), and Dave's version are up there with the best. Adding a rose engine detail to the trim is something unique. No doubt it adds some complexity to the turning and order of operations; even more so, it adds a ton of interest and possibilities for exploration. In addition to the trim detail, he also included a rose engine detail on the underside of the hat (I saw the additional photos below on a different forum). Beyond the extra details, Dave's hat form, wood choice, and embellishment color are superlative. Well done!

What a thrill, I just noticed this today when I logged in. Thank you so much Michael for your in depth review and kinds words. I am truly honored to have my piece "Low Rider" selected as Turning of the Week. Thanks to everyone for their kind words and for looking cheers. My wife and turning partner Alison suggested I try the Rose Engine to embellish the hats, we make a great team.

There's a hat that won't lose its form easily! Is the star inside the hat a fit to the stand?
Thanks Greg, the pattern on the inside of the hat was done when the wood was wet and before the hat was dried in the jig so it is somewhat distorted, it would be very difficult to have a mating surface. There is a 5" disk with a leather pad that the hat sits on, the disk is drilled and glued to the metal part of the stand so any hat can be used on that stand. Cheers
