I have a W/T legacy lathe (one made by Rockwell from the W/T prints) with a 1"x 8 spindle. I am trying to remove the spindle. Set screws removed from collar but I don't know if it screws on or is just stuck. Can anyone help with the proper removal of the collar? Thanks
 
You should ask this question in the main forum. But I will answer; when I rebuilt my powermatic 45 replacing the spindle was part of the project. The way I did it is loosen all set screws and whatever else I could; then I took a hammer and a block of wood and hammered the spindle out. It took a lot of hammering but it worked. I had to hammer the new spindle back in also, the hammering did not bend it that I could notice.

Welcome to the forum John. I have no experience with the lathe you describe but I would like to say that I've never been a big fan of driving spindles out with successive hammer blows. If that's the only method available then I suppose you're stuck with it. But I'd suggest you attempt to find a way to press if out, and in, to reduce the risk of damaging your machine.
 
I'm not familar with that lathe either but most of the time when I remove the set screws and can't remove the part it's because the set screws have raised a burr that blocks the removeal of the part. Take a drill bit as close to the size of the hole as possible and put it in the hole. The turn on the drill and lightly ream the bottom of the hole. This usually removes the burr and lets you tap the part off.
 
My machine works fine. I should point out the block of wood, I placed the block of wood against the spindle and then hammered on the block of wood, not the spindle. Hope that helps any.
