What are some of your design "rules"..?

Odie, I do not think of them as rules but preferences. An artist knows all of the preferences imposed by others but knows when to disregard them. In the silly stuff I like to do, you will find balance but never the golden mean.

Okay....."preferences" is probably a better word to use here, as "rules" implies rigidity. I have my own preferences, and they are from time to time, flexible.

Ahhhh, preferences, AKA, the comfort zone!!

I’m curious as to why my comfort zone almost always grows to become more uncomfortable!

I find myself constantly searching for “peace of mind”; trying to jettison past, learned disabilities (maybe?). I suppose my segmenting/ woodturning is mimicking this journey as well!!

“Change/ answers is growth”……..right????

I will say, it is a very entertaining show to be a part of!!

Heres a question im sure most will think is dumb,
If attempting a tall slim vessel or vase should i cut it from a piece with no pith? Or just wing it and make sure the pith is just mostly gone?

Wanting to try and turn some taller stuff, thinking use my Carter steady rest and a faceplate for the base for hollowing it out, i know i would most likely get better figure from a side of the pith piece that just has the rings rather than a center of a branch piece.

Guess im just looking for input on how you guys do these things, never tried before on anything deeper than about 8”

I'm a little skeptical that DE actually said that. That sounds more like something that a beginner would say and can be a contributing factor for painting oneself into a corner. I'm pretty sure that a chunk of wood has never had anything to say to me or maybe I'm just too hard of hearing. I make basket illusion turnings and before I start, I research Native American coiled basket designs and make detailed CAD drawings before tools touch the wood. The only time I hear wood having anything to say has nothing to do with design, but instead, it is letting me know that it's unhappy and is considering flying off the lathe.
I dunno, lately ive just been putting chunks of wood on the lathe in different ways and just start cutting,
Kinda fun actually, and when something goes awry, i just change direction a little. This really isnt an exact science,
