Cotton Wood - box is 7 inches high with acrylic finial 1 inch tall. The width is 3 1/2 inches wide. Bright yellow stain on top blending into yellow into orange then into red. Has 7 coats of high gloss wipe-on-poly.
Not aware of Cotton wood down our way gary, I like the colour transition, is that finial partially hollowed?, nice job all round :)

Pete-

Thanks. The finial is 5/8 inch stock that I turned round then drilled down 3/4 of and inch with a 1/4 inch drill bit then started an angle cut on the inside of the piece. After doing the hollowing, sanding then polishing, sanded it on a 45 degree angle. I wanted an non polished edge on the angled area

Gary......as did Pete, the first thing I noticed on this piece is the nice transition of color with your dye work.

Can I assume you did your detail grooves with one of those burn wires I see advertised? (Never tried that.) It looks like you may have used the same technique on the collar......?

Odie-

I have a piece of wire (like solid picture hanging wire) about 16 inches long with the ends passing through a couple 1/2 dowls about 2 to 3 inches long. After doing a burning - DO NOT GRAB THE WIRE-IT"S REAL HOT ( don't ask me how I know). Dependng on how long you hold the wire on your piece determines the depth of the burn wire going.

Thanks for the kind words Odie and Jim.

Gary

Gary, this box has two things that bother me. As tall as it is the square bottom makes the work slam into the table. A slight undercurve to the base would have taken care of that and given this work lift. For me the finial does not create an avenue for the eye to flow around the work. I really like the bead and the main body flow to this.
