Looming
Hickory sphere, White Oak pedestal, Niove base, and Betel nut "gem". This was fun piece to put together, a translation of a thought into wood. I turned the sphere quite a while ago, and used it as a sort of practice piece for textures and patterns. I decided to carve the surface away and add a bunch of new texture, burn, wirebrush, paint and stain to transform the sphere into a metal-wood hybrid "thing". The pedestal is repurposed from another piece I made a while ago, and I re-carved/textured portions of it for this piece. More below.
Nice composition, Michael. QUICK ... move that beautiful nut !!! "Looming"? ..... perhaps something like "Imminent or Pending Doom" would be more descriptive for us with slower minds. :p
Never heard of Niove wood ... looks very interesting.

Hahaha. Funny you mention that. Originally, when I was planning the piece I was going to name it “Impending”. But, I was trying to really capture anxiety as the theme (rather than danger). To me, when something is looming it is a background fear that is always around. Not necessarily immediate, but almost certainly coming at some point. That’s what directed the surface treatments of the sphere. With “Impending” as the name, I was going to make the sphere look like stone. When I settled on “Looming”, I decided to go for something a bit more ambiguous, hence the metal-wood hybrid thing.

I’ve been engrossed in a world of eggs, hearts, and mini-calabashes lately, so this was a little pit stop to weirdsville haha.

Niove is a wild wood. I hadn’t heard of it until the day I purchased the board. I’d love to find a piece in bowl blank size, but I think dimensioned flat stock is about all you can find. Haven’t dug deep yet.
