Pseudopalmus Cherry Bowl

Pseudopalmus Cherry Bowl

The name is a bit of nonsense, but fun. "Fake palm" because to me the texture has the appearance of an endgrain Black Palm bowl. However, the wood is Black Cherry. I created the texture on the exterior with a sharp woodburning tip applied mostly in an upward stabbing motion. I also added a lot of fine lines to make it more interesting. I scrubbed the surface with a nylon brush. The process was tedious and time-consuming, but I really like the end result. The bowl has a calabash shape, and I added a foot because I think the texture benefits from a lift. Finished with hemp oil. 6.5"d x 3.25"h
I am a big fan of texturing and you have done a great job on this! Love the name too! May I ask if you used any guidelines to help going in a straight line! It looks REALLY consistent! I have been putting off buying a burner and now you may be responsible for my too large credit card bill next month ;)

Thanks Will! Next time I will add a disclaimer: not responsible for future tool purchases. :p

I do add some guidelines as I go. With this one I started around the rim and just moved downward, but as I got to the middle of the bowl and toward the curve under I burned lines around so I could follow. Then it’s just a matter of halving the space between the lines, and halving them again. Same with the bottom of the foot. Sometimes I pencil, other times I just eyeball it. Here’s a different bowl, but same concept (on the interior).
