Sugar Maple Burl Vessel

Sugar Maple Burl Vessel

Turned from a sugar maple burl vessel that Chris Ramsey gave me 7-8 years ago. It was primo material with enough to get three pieces. This piece was in the freezer several years, then turned 2-3 years ago. I just recently got around to the carving. Sometimes things take a while.

I love those form. It looks so harmonious. Very nice.

Yep, @John Jordan is famous for this general concept. Others have tried to copy it, but he owns it! To me, JJ's use of this form seems organic, and maybe that's the intent.....?

John, do you seal the grain in any traditional manner, as well......or is it in the freezer exclusively?

Can you give your thoughts on why a freezer may be better for preserving turning wood?

Thanks,

-----odie-----

Thanks for the kind words Odie. I wrap the wood in stretch wrap usually, sometimes just a plastic grocery bag for small pieces. It keeps the wood the same as when it was put in, I don't know of any other way to do that without getting staining etc. I've turned pieces 7-8 years old. It's a good way to keep a few primo or hard to get woods. The only wood I've had trouble with is camphor with exploded in every direction. Makes sense I guess since it's a temperate environment wood.
