Texture, Color, Form

This 5-inch tall half-twist vase was turned from Poplar as an experiment in texture, color and form. The poplar was not a very exciting wood, so I colored the base in transparent red and orange. The center black band was carved and textured with an oscillating carver and a rotary tool. The upper twisted section was painted in two tones of grey-green and then textured with a rotary tool. I felt that the wood grains needed to 'peek out' from inside the vase to add some contrasting color and grain patterns. Overall, it was an evolving exercise that proceeded in stages with some 'redesign' steps in between.
