Twisted Planets

This 5-inch diameter bowl was turned from a block of spalted elm using a multi-axis method to generate the upper twist. Small 'planets' were carved into the surfaces of the twist and colored to highlight the twist and add a splash of color. Finish is Watco oil buffed on the Beall system.
What was the method to produce the scallops? Really nice shape produced especially as a tri-lobe.

Consider Swarovski crystals for the planets. Might be easier to create and provides a nice fire. Hobby Lobby and Amazon stock them.
