my favorite negative reviews on this were the ones complaining that it was too difficult to use. They had to mount it to a table because they couldn't use it handheld. Or the one that says it requires two people to use it. I really get lots of entertainment reading amazon reviews
I went from a Laguna 15/24 lathe (sold) to this Powermatic 3520C .
One thing I was pleasantly surprised with was the quill on the tail stock is much more solid and precise ( no play side to side or up an down) on the powermatic.
My Laguna was loosely goosey and with out knowing any better I just accepted it, I am hoping my pepper mills will be much more accurate now with the drilling of the stock

I had the same Laguna as you and upgraded to the 3520c. I had no problems with the Laguna in the 2 1/2 years I had it, but I just outgrew it and had put a lot of hours on it. These two lathes aren't in the same category, I considered the Laguna a midi and the Powermatic a full sized lathe. First the Powermatic is more than double the weight of the Laguna and size. Second you are correct, fit and finish are better on the Powermatic. It handles drilling pepper mills very well but I do use a steady rest to help hold them perfectly on center when drilling. I called yesterday and they are shipping the control button cover.
Yay!! Hopefully you can take off your zip lock baggie now...
That x-acto model looks very similar to the vintage Boston sharpener that has been with me for almost 50 years now.
When I sold the business and retired a decade ago from daily work in the design firm I started 40 years earlier, one of the things I took with me was a pencil sharpener that I had bought used and used nearly daily. It’s a Boston Ranger hand crank with six pencil diameters it will handle and a selector for three lengths of lead…it is an awesome tool if you spend time with a sketch pad.
It hangs on the wall beside my small working desk in the shop.
They are. You probably have the right screws in your shop. You will need more to mount its replacement in a couple of years. Ask me how I know.
How do you like it so far? I am in the market for a lathe , just haven't decided which one

In my opinion, if you are good with a sliding headstock, and possibly cast-iron construction motivates you as well.......you might find similar lathes, but you won't find a better lathe than the 3520c.
Can anyone tell me if the 3520c banjo can be purchased separately? For those of you who have a 3520c lathe, can you tell me the overall length of the bottom machined surface?
I am thrilled with my new rotating headstock Vicmarc VL240 lathe, but the banjo sucks. I'm thinking the 3520c banjo might be a great replacement with its pinch style of securing the tool rest post.

I was using a Laguna Revo 15/24 for about 3 years before pulling the trigger on the 3520C Mustard Monster.
I have several turnings featuring this lathe in the "whats on your lathe" thread on this site to see some of the items I am turning on this machine.
So far this lathe has exceeded my expectations. Very stable , Very powerful, Fun to turn on.
I have turned large bowls to tiny lidded boxes and it doesn't matter what goes on it, the lathe is one smooth machine.
Very hefty though at 726 pounds and mine is in my basement. Had to have another help me bring it down in sections.
If you can get one on sale, like I did, it is even a nicer machine.
So Far Powermatic as a company has been very pleasant to work with.
Whew that was alot.
If you decide to get one you won't regret it for even a second.
