Made this for my parents for Hanukkah.
Started a segmented piece using one of my favorite wood combinations - koa and ebony. This one’s for an exchange.
I love the look of segmented work. But never having tried it, isn't it a LOT of work? Cutting and glueing, then glueing thie rings together?
There’s definitely more time in cutting and gluing than there is in turning, but it’s fun to do. If you’re interested, look at the wedgie sled as a starting point for cutting segments on the table saw - you can find a great video called Segmentology on YouTube about how to build it, and you can also check out Jerry Bennett’s site at https://www.segeasy.com/wedgies.htm
It's off my lathe now and given away before I could take a nice picture but this was the only picture of it close to being done. I had 2 people retiring this year and made each of them one of my inside out twig pots. I knew I made a mistake on the second one and trimmed too close to the base. The base was only 3/16" smaller in diameter than the first but it tipped right over. I had to scramble and attach a second wider base to both.
