13th Bowl. Koa Calabash

13th Bowl. Koa Calabash

This is my 13th Bowl. My second attempt at a Koa Calabash. Roughly 9 inches wide and 7 tall.

A Calabash is a traditional Hawaiian shape based on the calabash gourds that get used as bowls and vessels in the Pacific Islands. The shapes are very organic and traditional, but varied. When Hawaiians made bowls from wood they actually hollowed them and smoothed them with stone and shell tools, and sand and plant materials as sandpaper. Very impressive results that are humbling.

Those of you who understand calabash forms please feel free to gig me hard on these. They are my first efforts.
I see a big improvement in the curve on this one David, your second Calabash. The curve continues well from the widest point to the rim without flattening. The slightly inward slope of the rim completes it well. I too would be interested in comments from those who turn this form regularly.
