I don't know that I've ever turned any sycamore but that sure is pretty. There's lots of it around here and I just got a sawmill so I can see some 1/4 sawn sycamore in my future.

I got lucky, the guy had just emptied his kiln so I was pretty early. He said it goes fast.
Wife says she wants a bowl. Chucked up a piece of 11 x 5 walnut. Rounded the outside. Grabbed a small core out of it so far.
Ended up with a 9 x 4 finished piece. Walnut oil finish.
Last piece of the consignment bowls completed on the lathe with a coat of DO. That makes a total of seven for the client. Now their decision on oil, lacquer, or a combination of both for the finish.

Getting closer to Christmas and I need to get the gift bowls ready for my gold, silver, and bronze friends
. Gold of course gets nice figured bowls, bronze gets nice bowls.
Had time to second turn one this morning before heading to pick up my granddaughter, thought it would be a bronze bowl but has some nice figure in it so it may go to a silver friend!

Cherry HF on the lathe. I ran into several rotten knots in this one and had to keep changing shape to cut them out. Hopefully finish tomorrow.

This is awesome and great timing!
I had hopes for this sassafras crotch. I guess the tree had been dead longer than I thought. It was very punky. I used about $10 worth of thin CA on it. I still have the other half, which is slightly thicker. I have soaked it in shellac. I'll probably spin it up with low expectations.

Working on a bowl from a board project. I misguessed the ring cut spacing and now Im dealing with very thin walls but I think the bowl will survive.
Cutting across end grain in hard dry hickory. Ok on one side. Cuts clean and shiny. Other side picks up the unsupported end grain. I’m definitely standing out of the line of fire! Sorby SRG goes from sharp to not in just this much turning. Maybe I’ll get a small weed pot out of this exercise….

just working from scratch i have learned that measurements need to be consistent or you have "issues"
this one is paper thin in two spots as a result inconsistent ring dimension. just having fun.

Looks to me almost like you got bit by hidden ring shake.
I did get a similar product where I was making the inside bigger than the outside

Grabbed a piece of ancient kauri I got in the mail yesterday. Pretty cool holding a piece of wood between 30,000 and 50,000 years old. Hope I don't mess up!
Happens every time I start cleaning up the shop. Moving some stuff around and found three walnut bowls from 2023 and decided to second turn them….finish cleaning later!!
It's been a while since I posted. I got a lacy oak tree delivered and it's been a lot of turning to break it down....

This is the first bowl that was completely second turned on my new VL240 lathe. All went well. The bowl is maple burl, and it's not any better than it would have been if it had been done on the old Woodfast lathe.
What's different is I didn't wear a back brace at all!
