One of my favorites too. Looking forward to seeing what comes out of it.Got a beautiful chunk of masur birch from Germany. 10.5 inch length and over 5 inch diameter. Probably will get View attachment 85827View attachment 858283 hollow forms out of it. Not sure what to do yet but decision forthcoming. Love this wood.
Hi, really interested in what you've achieved using your eBay knurler. The chequered pattern is really good. I've tried one before but with limited success, in fact it was a complete failure to be honest but I may have bought the wrong type. Have you still got the details please.Walnut, 8 x 4.25
Candy dish with embellishment done with an ebay knurler.
For $12 it'll work (on walnut anyway)
Feines Holz right? That is where my most recent TOTW box wood came from.Got a beautiful chunk of masur birch from Germany. 10.5 inch length and over 5 inch diameter. That is a really interesting effect, Ron. How did you do it? It looks so even and regular, like it was done with a tool.Round and brown walnut with a little embellishment to add interest. 9 inches in diameter. Still needs sanding and multiple coats of Tried and True.

Thanks Alan for your kind comment !Pretty amazing that it’s just your first. Looks great.
Thanks Ted ! I really enjoy precision work such as segmented turning. It takes a lot of time, and the actual turning process is very short. However, I will use segments again for my next project. If that’s your first than your going to be amazing at this!
I think it is red oak, judging by the red in it. But, I’m no expert.White oak?
Wood ID is a bit of a hobby with me.I think it is red oak, judging by the red in it. But, I’m no expert.

@John K Jordan thanks for info. Here’s a closeup pic of the end grain. I think it looks more like red oak but I like your last comment - it’s just oak if anyone asks!Note that large earlywood pores of white oak are filled with what might look like tiny crystals call tyloses; red oak pores are empty.
Or do what many do, just make up a species name and write it on the bottom.

If you like turning crotch wood I've got fresh walnut down. Even a 3-way crotch on one.
I have a big walnut crotch I need to process first. I still need to come over for skew training! If you like turning crotch wood I've got fresh walnut down. Even a 3-way crotch on one.
Beautiful!
JKJAnd, @Joel Daniels, another very useful web site is the oddly named HobbithouseInc. Here's there article on Red Oak.
Down the page you'll see a huge number of photos of the various red oak boards. You can check if your piece is consistent with any.
Just for fun, here's there page on Canary wood. Keep in mind again, that with ANY species there will always be a huge variation in what the face grain of a board varies.
Note there is far more verified info on domestic US species than many "exotics".

Kent,This was a smallish (11" or so) persimmon that had to come down. I cut it down 18 months ago and set it out to spalt. 6" bowl. It's still very green so will look a bit different when it dries.

Kent,
What did you do to get the spalt going?
I have a bunch of kinda plain jacaranda that i know spalts well, but it also rots well, spalting it would make for some nice turnings though.
What did you do to get the spalt going?
Are there different types of persimmon? Chunks I have were very white with a small black center. Course I haven't gotten around to doing anything with them yet so maybe they look like that inside now. This was a smallish (11" or so) persimmon that had to come down.
